i really hope that you can help me. my dobie is everything to me so i cant give him up. there are dogs in surrounding few houses that bark then cause my dog to bark alot. i have tried spray collar sound collar and have now had to use the electric collar. it was recommeneded by the vet and its humane. its killing me more than him i hate to have to put it on but the neighbours have complained to the council who are now recording next door. what else can i do?
im really distressed and have tried trainign methods such a the bottle shaking and trainign that has also been rec by my vet. i need urgent help before i go into deep depression as they said if the recording shows that the barking goes on to long which is does due to other dogs i will have a 5 k fine and will have to sell my baby. help
try getting a spray bpottle to wet your dog when it barks and remember to say what its getting wet for,for example “bad boy be quiet and dont bark again or you will get wet again”.it works even if the dog likes water.
have you tried leaving your dog indoors with a telly or wireless on but please do not use the electric collar any i would never consider they have negative reinforcement and side effect on the dogs behaviour
have been on you tube and they do some very good training videos this is just one of themhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=F7if2sk6Lg…

Listen to your vet.
The electronic shock collar is not cruel for the dog.
The shock is not meant to hurt the dog and really is more to get their attention and change their focus to something else.
Used properly they work very very well for some things and barking is one of those things. It is remote and the dog does not associate the correction with you. He is self correcting when he barks.
These work very well but the owner must trun it on and put it on the dog to get results.
This option is better than getting fined or having to get rid of your pet is it not???
i have two Dobies both bitches. My younger one (14 months) used to bark at nothing. I taught her not to bark willy nilly by, when she barked for no reason I would just say ‘no: as I meant it but do not shout, he will shout back at you!!! When he barks at the door praise him & then tell him to sit. If he continues to b ark continue with the ‘no’ command. It will take a little time but dobies are very intelligent. He will earn fast….. Please don’t shout at him
Also, he needs to be able to bark it’s natural. He is a good protector. Forget the collar…Good luck
I will get lots of thumbs down on this one but if it weren’t humane after all, I would never recommend it and it is only recommended in the most dire of cases and yours sounds like one.
Check in your area and get referrals. One thing you can do is to have the dogs bark reduced. I am not talking about a total de-barking but a quick surgical procedure that reduces the decibals of your dogs’ bark so the neighbors are not disturbed.
Before everyone starts getting their panties in a bunch, I was a strong opponent of this for years….. Mostly because I had misconceptions of the affects on the dog. I can tell you honestly, the surgery is a short one, a child having their tonsils out suffer much, much more, the dog honestly does not realize it has a different bark. No, the dog is not traumatized. I know of totally debarked dogs that still ‘bark’ 24/7 but the neighbors no longer realize it and the owner got to keep their dog and bring about peace in their neighborhood. The dog will be fed soft food the evening it has surgery and by the next morning it is eating normal, running around, playing and doesn’t realize anything is different.
This is the most radical move to keep your dog, but in some cases it is the only alternative to getting rid of the dog. I feel, if you love your dog that much and want to keep it but cannot move, this is the answer.
I do rescue and believe me, a few condo dwellers have been able to keep their dog rather than turn it over to me, by having the bark reduction surgery.
Electric collars ARE cruel whatever anyone else says including your vet. How would you like to keep being given electric shocks. Some friends of ours used one on their Staffy and now it is nuts. It was a lovely pup but now it hates other dogs and will bite anyone who comes into the house. The only way to train a dog is with kindness. If you’ve been using all these methods to stop him barking and they haven’t worked you need to get a professional dog trainer’s help. Chuck the collar.
Make sure he is getting plenty of exercise and activities OUTSIDE of your house. Tired dogs are much quieter. Also, I would hire a professional trainer to work with you at least one time and make sure you are using the collar correctly and maybe they can show you some other methods as well. Good luck!
To Meggan’s Mum: Electronic collars have many settings and do not hurt the dog as long as the person who is using them knows how to do it correctly. Have you ever tried one on your self? It delivers a pulsing “static shock.” It is not painful.
You sure that you have the collar on correctly?? And you sure that the battery is working?? I have not seen a Doberman that doesn’t get that first snap and decide that barking isn’t worth it.. Maybe 1 or 2 more tries Just to make sure. But they are smart, they know that collar is on and they can’t bark..
call the famous dog whisperer! really! try to find him!! or man you are in trouble….why dont you try playing more with him so he gets distracted….my dog is a dobberman with pointer and man…she is such a good house keeper…but it also drives me crazy she barks at every fly that flies around….i try to keep her busy while she is outside but most of the time i keep her inside….
You should really contact a professional on animal training…and an electric collar wont heal the problem!! He will barely understand why the collar if he doesnt have an incentive that prizes good behavior…
Good luck!
The shaking of a bottle is not loud enough, the noise you must make when he barks has got to distract his attention you have to do it close to him and quickly, use the command NO at the same time, if poss. put him on a leash and pull at it at the same time as saying this. Be firm don’t use any other words but NO then keep repeating it as and when he barks, but it must be continuous. I recommend watching Dog Borstal on Telly it’s really good (they use small hand held like symbols) Hope it helps.
are you keeping him inside or outside? i highly doubt they can make you get rid of your dog if the other dogs in the neighborhood are barking as well. if you have tried all the no bark collars and he is being kept indoors, you might have to try putting a muzzle on him while you are home with him and when he attempts to bark spray him with water and say “no bark”. you need to be firm and loud when you say it.
do not leave him unattended with a muzzle on
Sorry but i think you better sell him, or give him away to someone in a big farm! He is far to big a dog to keep in council accomodation anyway!
