How Can I Stop My Dog From Barking So Much?
Posted by adminFeb 25
Help, my dog barks at the slightest thing, she can be laying in her bed and will hear a noise outside, it could be the slightest of noises and she starts barking and won’t stop for ages, if she hears foxes outside she starts again and she also runs at the front door throwing herself at it til we wake up and send her back to bed. Her barking is driving us mad, any advise will be appreciated.
Umm i seen this on a dog training show.
it said to keep a leash on the dog at all times
and when it barks to pull on the leash to distarct the dog
so it stops barking, also said to try to stop the dog from barking before it starts.
It sounds like your dog might be bored and needs training to sort her out.
Do:
A lot of short training sessions (say 5 x 5 min) each day to keep her mentally stimulated. Make sure you take her for a walk or 2 as appropriate for her breed every day.
Make an attempt to do something more interesting when she barks and to stop her positively rather than aversion to the behaviour. This will help when you are not there, she won’t be as interested in the noise.
Don’t use harsh or aversive methods unless you have made a serious attempt to correct the behaviour using positive methods. Remember, it’s not her fault she barks, she has been made that way. it’s up to you to work with her to make sure she doesn’t bark.
I have two BC’s and spend a LOT of time on training all sorts of things as well as working with them to ignore those sorts of stimuli. We choose reactive dogs, it’s up to us to work through the challenges they present.
Get rid of him. He needs a new environment.
My dog does that too and I used to get really mad until there was someone standing halfway down our driveway in the middle of the night. Her barking scared the guy away. I would never muzzle my dog at night for that reason. However, during the day you can use a bark collar if you want. Its a collar that slighly zaps the dog when they bark and the dog eventually figures it out. I think its cruel though. I like the idea of putting a muzzle on instead. Just for a little while, so they know not to bark.
alot of it depends on the age and breed of the dog. a young dog is anxious and is expected to make alot of noise at practically nothing. if thats the case the only thing you can do is be patient.
if shes older to the point of maturity, between 1/12 to 2 years, you have to establish a punishment. NOT VIOLENT. normally throwing something such as a pillow or toy at the door when they make noise works. it might take a while tho.
if shes an athletic dog such as my bullies, she may just need excercise. something to wear her out during the day so shes not so anxious and full of energy. she will sleep better. and the excercise creates an amazing bond between you and your animal.
good luck.
It’s your decision if you want her to be a watch dog of stop her barking. Ther are several things available on the market that can prevent them from barking. Barking collars, barking muzzles, depending how big she is, i have large breeds.
The next time the barking starts, put a muzzle on the pet and leave it on for about 30 minutes. You will have to do this over and over but the dog will eventually get the message.
